2 Must-see Attractions for Military Buffs in Saumur

Being home to one of the world’s largest tank museums, it is no wonder why Saumur is a popular destination amongst military enthusiasts. But that is not the only reason why Saumur is a place of military significance to France. Today we have gathered information for 3 military attractions that are a must-visit for those passionate about the military.

1. Musée des Blindés (Tank Museum)

Founded in 1977, the museum was established through the collaborative effort of the French military hierarchy and the local political authorities. The museum started with a small collection of a few hundred vehicles. Almost half a century later, Musée des Blindés is now home to over 880 vehicles and has the world's largest collection of armoured fighting vehicles.

The displays here reflect a long period of history, spanning World War I up to the present day. Here, visitors can view tanks from France, Germany, the US, the UK and Russia. Some of the highlights include the German Tiger I, the American Sherman, the British Churchill, and the Soviet T-34.

The museum also hosts guided tours, workshops and special exhibitions that change throughout the year. Make sure to visit the museum website to get all the details!

2. École de cavalerie (Cadre Noir)

Also named the French Cavalry School, École de cavalerie is a prestigious institution founded in 1815. The School was originally used to train cavalry officers and soldiers for the French Army. Nowadays, it is used to train troops of France's Arme blindée et cavalerie (Armoured Cavalry Arm) in reconnaissance and armoured warfare.

The academy is most renowned for its Cadre Noir, or "Black Frame," which refers to the elite group of instructors and riders who uphold the highest standards of horsemanship and classical riding techniques. Here, visitors can witness the incredible precision and mastery of the riders by spectating the galas: performances that showcase the beauty and athleticism of the horses and demonstrate the skills and expertise of the riders.

Visitors also have the rare opportunity to mount a horse and try horseriding for themselves. So if galloping on a horse into the sunset is one of your fantasies, make sure to pay a visit to Cadre Noir!
